"Truth is fallen in the street."
Undoubtedly you have met the type of person of whom I am about to write. On any given day, you may be bouncing along in a taxi which you are sure is piloted by a newly released felon.
Or, contrariwise, you may chance to be in one of the mile long lines in your local Wal-Mart. (Of which lines, both Six Flags and Disneyworld would gladly pay any person the sum of ten million dollars to accomplish the same for their establishments.) But be the scene whatever it may, you will, while waiting, be standing beside, or otherwise be in close proximity to, the type of person who I now describe.
In general, the person who stands next to you, as you wait for exactly twenty-seven and one half hours to get your license, is a liar. He, or she, may tell you this grandiose story about how he once nearly caught a fish bigger than your Volvo. Do not believe him. The truth of the matter is actually that he went fishing with his nephew, and he most assuredly would have perished without him.
For this brave lad was finally able to free himself from the talon-like grasp of his uncle, long enough to sever the 20lb test line which was securely wrapped around his uncle’s neck. And this he did, after struggling to keep his and his uncle’s head above water. Though this man will probably tell you that he was struggling with Moby Dick himself, I repeat, do not you believe him.
For if you were but able to speak with his nephew-John, I believe it was-he would relate quite a different tale. You would hear, as he sits at a table which is filled with raucous laughter, his averment by oath, that the ‘beast’ which nearly garroted his uncle was merely the Christmas tree that he had dumped into the waters January last to attract fish.
Unfortunately you do not know John. And you only know Reverend Jackson slightly better. Though it is true that you sit, or rather, sleep through many of his sermons each year, you have never, to my knowledge, had him or his wife Margery over to dinner. And this is just as well, since you do not particularly like them anyway.
The fact of the matter is you would rather pretend that the light is mere nano-seconds away from changing than be forced to dig through your wallet for a dollar that you truly do have to spare. But which dollar you would rather not give to this bum, who so obviously will spend it on cheap wine.
In short, who among us is completely honest?

So what you're trying to say is that we should give bums money b/c we're not honest either? I would say that yes, we are not completely honest but the reason I do not frequently give money away to the homeless is not because they lie, but because of a social philosophy on the homeless problem in America.

Interesting that you picked on two sentences out of about fifty...guilty conscience?

Who is C-dub? I think he should tell us what 'social philosophy' he means. I mean what youre saying makes no sense. Either you agree with what Carl was saying or you don't. His point had nothing to do with bums. Sheesh, what a moron!! Here, let me try a "c-dub" : I don't like airplanes because of a 'social philosophy' on airplanes in America...Maybe it should be 'c-dumb' Peace
