ACLU Action Alert!!! Lt. Gov. John Wilder prays!!! (Oops, my mistake. As he directed his prayer to the “lawmakers,” the ACLU probably won’t mind.)
In our final report on Lt. Gov. John Wilder from the Times, 5/28/05, pg. A8, we read this bit.
“Wilder seemed to agree during a prayer he made to lawmakers after his speech. ‘Money out there was here offered as bait to get someone in jail,’ he said. ‘It’s wrong. It’s not your (God’s) sic way.”
Now gentle reader I was about to ‘get up in arms’ over this prayer. How dare our Lt. Governor make a prayer and pretend his god is better’n mine! I was pretty hot, I tell ya. But, as I was getting ready to dial the final numeric digit which would have immediately connected me with my fully authorized ACLU liaison, I realized what Mr. Wilder had actually done. He had not in fact prayed a religious prayer, which thing is, of course, punishable.
But he had prayed—now pay attention—he “seemed to agree during a prayer he made to lawmakers…”
Whew! See, as I hung up the phone averting what could have been a terrible disaster; I did so because I realized he was praying to the lawmakers.
At least we Tennesseans now know to whom Mr. Wilder prays. Further, Mr. Wilder’s understanding of said lawmakers is quite clear. “It’s not your (God’s) sic way.” Apparently he deems our 'lawmakers' just slightly more than ‘god-like.’
God, any god, help us all.
Carl
*DISCLAIMER:
The author is merely poking fun at what he perceives to be an error in the reporting of to whom Mr. Wilder prayed. Oh, and obviously the ACLU.
