Memorial Day, 2005.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us. . .that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion. . .that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain. . .that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom. . .and that government of the people. . .by the people. . .for the people. . .shall not perish from this earth.” (Lincoln's Gettysburg Address, given November 19, 1863 on the battlefield near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, USA)

Though written a few years before General John Alexander Logan gave his order, the sentences cited above, which were given by our former President Abraham Lincoln, seem to me to be a fitting tribute to give to you on this Memorial Day, 2005.

May we truly resolve that our dead have not died in vain.
